Notting Hill

Two centuries ago, Notting Hill was little more than a wasteland. It was in the mid-19th century that the area became residential, with the construction of the Norland and Ladbroke estates. Those crescent-shaped streets boast large and handsome terraced houses, around which beautiful communal garden squares are surrounded.

It is now a very affluent area, popular with both families and professionals but still retains much of its bohemian charm and cosmopolitan vibe, thanks in part to the large community of Afro-Caribbean residents who made the area home in the 1950s.

While there is a huge variety of restaurants and shops at Notting Hill Gate, the majority of the action in the area happens along world-famous Portobello Road, where the much-loved Saturday market takes place each week. The annual Notting Hill Carnival, which happens in August, is the largest street festival in Europe.
